ENVIRONMENTAL CHECKLIST FOR NEW EMPLOYEES


1.0 PURPOSE:

Discuss this checklist with new employees.
Checklist to be completed by authorized personnel before a new employee is assigned any work.



2.0 DISCUSSION:

The important of protecting the environment as well as importance of health and safety of people must be impressed upon employees.

Important that all facility employees dealing with fertilizer business operations understand, comply with, evaluate and review all applicable laws and regulations and that they act responsibly in order to protect themselves and the environment.



3.0 ENVIRONMENTAL LEGISLATION:

Environmental legislation in Ontario requires us as citizens, to act in a reasonable and responsible manner in order to protect and preserve environmental quality. Fines and penalties may be imposed on those who contravene laws and regulations.



4.0 TRAINING


4.1 TRAINING OVERVIEW:

Employees should be educated (as part of the job) and trained in procedures that take the environment into consideration.

Procedures for clean up and reporting of environmental occurrences (spills, leaks, releases) should be in place.

Employees should be trained in the use of personal protective equipment, spill clean up equipment and your facility emergency action/response plan.

Employee training is critical to ongoing compliance. Training should be documented as evidence of due diligence. Performance can be enhanced through training in:

  • Spill prevention
  • Spill cleanup/response
  • Safety training
  • First aid training
  • Hazards analysis
  • Lockout/tagout
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
  • Transportation of dangerous goods
  • Emergency action/response plan
  • Workplace inspections
  • Permit compliance requirements
  • Government inspection protocols

4.2 EQUIPMENT:

Explain the importance of equipment and where and when to use it.

  • Spent fire water retention
  • Storage facilities
  • Sewer locations (barriers)
  • Product signs, ID
  • Cleaning rolling stock
  • Containers, drums, bags
  • Emergency action/response plan
  • Maps of site/facility
  • Equipment for special hazards

4.3 MATERIALS:

  • Discuss material used at site. Refer to Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
  • Explain what to do in the event of contamination.
  • Explain what to do in the event a spill of that material occurs.
  • Explain the requirements for container disposal.
  • Stress the importance of good housekeeping.
  • Educate the employee on the your company's emergency response plan. (by discussing the plan and/or by mock/practice drills, etc.)
  • Discuss and stress the importance of reporting and documenting all spills; both major and minor.
  • Discuss and stress the importance of cleaning the equipment by either rinsing equipment in the field or at properly designed work facilities.
  • Discuss the proper storage and handling procedures for materials on site.

4.4 JOB DUTIES:

  • Provide the employee with a copy of the Spill Reporting Guideline.
  • Ensure the employee has a job description, which explains environmental policy and practice in the performance of all tasks. Stress the environmental aspects of handling for all material on the job site or facility.
  • Impress upon the employee the importance of the proper notification procedure if there is any doubt as to the environmental aspect of any of the job functions to be performed. Ensure that the proper chain of command is communicated to the employee (i.e. who to contact in what instance - plant manager, supervisor, etc.).
4.5 FIRE PROTECTION:

  • Discuss the procedure for reporting fires.
  • Indicate to the employee, the location of equipment to guard against spent firewater.
  • Explain and train in the use of fire fighting equipment.
